API 5L pipes are categorised into different grades depending on their strength characteristics. The grade X followed by a numerical value details the yield strength in PSI. For instance, API 5L Grade X42 PSL 2 pipe indicates that the yield strength of the pipe is about 42 PSI. Compared to both grade A and grade B, the content of manganese is slightly higher in an Api 5l X42 Pipe.

This being said, the increase in the percentage of manganese makes the pipe much stronger and much harder than either grade A or grade B carbon steel pipes. Another distinguishing point in its chemistry is the content of carbon in the alloy of ISO 3183 L290 Pipe. In comparison to grade A, the content of carbon in both grade B and in Grade X42 is much higher. Although the carbon percentage for Api 5l Grade X42 Pipe and grade B is equivalent. The technical committee at API created two different product specification levels for different requirements. While the Api 5l X42 Psl1 Pipe is a standard level, PSL 2 has more stricter requirements in terms of its testing and chemistry. A strict control over its chemistry, test methods and quality checks makes Api 5l X42 Psl2 pipes a more high quality product with a longer service life. In addition to the Charpy tests, it is mandated that  PSL 2 have traceability, even after completion of tests. Along with the seamless variety, pipes could be produced as Api 5l X42 Erw.
