Standard IS 1161 applied to carbon steel pipes, which are intended for use in structural purposes. This standard comprises of the requirements for tubes that are constructed in any of the following manner i.e. –  hot finished seamless or IFS, hot finished welded or HFW  and electric resistance welded or ERW as well as high frequency induction welded or HRIW. Tubes produced using standard IS 1161 YST 240 are required to be finished very clean and they must be reasonably free from scale.

Furthermore, these tubes are required to be free from surface flaws, cracks, laminations in addition to other defects. The ends of the IS1161-98 hfs yst 240 Erw Pipe must have a clean-cut and it should be squared along the axis of the pipe, except if specified otherwise. Some forms of surface imperfections for instance – light die or ~011 marks, handling marks, or even shallow pits present on the IS 1161 grade YST 240 Hot Finished Welded Tube are not to be considered as defects according to standard IS 1161. However, the acceptance of these surface imperfections is conditional to the fact that these imperfections are rectified or modified within minimum wall thickness sanctioned. IS 1161 Grade YST 240 Steel Tubes of a welded construction must be free of metal that protrudes on the external surface of the weld seam. A common practice amongst buyers is to galvanise these tubes. If the IS 1161 YST 240 Steel Pipe is to be delivered in a galvanized condition, the coating of zinc on the surface of the pipe has to not only conform to the obligations but also must be tested per the methods that have been specified by standard IS 4736.
